Native LiDAR mapping

WalkerScan

A native iPhone and iPad app that turns nearby spaces into a personal 3D atlas. Capture with LiDAR, see scanned areas on a map, and return later to continue building a saved region.

Map the space. Keep exploring.

How it works

On LiDAR-equipped devices, ARKit reconstructs surrounding surfaces while a live camera overlay shows the captured geometry. MapKit places saved regions geographically using GPS and compass heading, with coverage tiles showing where surfaces have actually been scanned. Meshes, optional reference photos and AR world maps are stored locally. Users can explore saved scans in a 3D viewer and extend a region once ARKit recognizes the original surroundings; geographic placement remains approximate.

The stack

  • Swift
  • SwiftUI
  • ARKit
  • LiDAR
  • MapKit
  • SceneKit

Problems solved

  • Connects live 3D capture with a geographic overview of saved scans and observed surfaces.
  • Preserves scan geometry and reference photos locally for later inspection and continued capture.
  • Gates resumed scanning on relocalization, with visible save failures and retry support to protect captured work.
